And so it was, in the city of Istanbul, that a certain enterprise by the name of Midas, not the mythical king but a digital one, had performed a trick far more impressive than turning objects to gold. It had transmuted the very air, thick with the desperation of inflation and the boredom of lockdowns, into a cool eighty million American dollars. A sum, I might add, that would make even the most jaded devil in hell raise an eyebrow.
The sorcery, or ‘Series B funding round’ as the moderns call it, was led by a cabal of international financiers from QED Investors. They were joined by a chorus of new and existing backers-the IFC, HSG, a certain QuantumLight (a name suggesting its owners move faster than relativity allows), and others. All drawn, no doubt, by the siren song of three and a half million souls entrusting their crumbling liras to this digital chariot.
For what does this Midas offer? Not just the local baubles from the Borsa Istanbul, but the great American stocks, mutual funds, and of course, that most enigmatic of modern inventions-cryptocurrencies, those spectral coins that exist everywhere and nowhere at once.
And now, flushed with capital, they speak of becoming a ‘unicorn’. A fitting term for a beast whose existence is often debated but whose valuation is taken entirely on faith. The head strategist, one Can Gemici, declared this metamorphosis is probable in the next act. One can only imagine the next trick will involve pulling a real unicorn from a hat.
Their expansion plans? They are to introduce derivatives, warrants, and European stocks. Soon, even the most sophisticated speculator will be able to lose money with ‘advanced analytics’ and ‘margin investing’. A true paradise for the gambler’s soul, all wrapped in the promise of ‘competitive pricing’ and ‘free real-time data’! As for security and infrastructure? One must assume they are being fortified against the inevitable siege of reality.
In conclusion, a company born from pandemic idleness and economic despair now approaches mythical status. The only thing it hasn’t yet turned to gold is the user’s common sense. But that, dear reader, was never part of the bargain.
