So get this-some senator in the Philippines thinks putting the national budget on blockchain is a *great* idea. Because, you know, politicians are famously great with money and totally love accountability. 🙄
- Senator Bam Aquino-yes, that’s his real name-wants every peso tracked on-chain. Because nothing says “trustworthy” like a politician suggesting full financial transparency.
- The Department of Budget and Management already has a blockchain thingy. Because of course they do. It’s 2024-if you’re not slapping “blockchain” on something, are you even trying?
At the Manila Tech Summit (because every politician needs a tech summit these days), Bam Aquino-who, by the way, sounds like a character from a bad sitcom-pitched this idea like it was the next sliced bread.
“No one is crazy enough to put their transactions on blockchain,” he said. CORRECT. Because most politicians prefer their financial dealings to be, you know, *mysterious*. But Bam’s out here like, “Let’s log every cent!” Bold move, senator. Let’s see if it pays off. 🍿
If this happens, the Philippines could be the *first* country to do this. Or, more likely, the first country to realize halfway through, “Wait, why did we think this was a good idea?”
The Department of Budget and Management already has some blockchain thing running-built by BayaniChain (because every blockchain startup needs a patriotic name), Prismo (which sounds like a rejected Pokémon), and Polygon (because why not?).
Right now, they’re only uploading boring budget documents-SAROs and NCAs-because apparently, the juicier stuff is still being handled the old-fashioned way: behind closed doors. 😏
No word yet on whether they’ll scale this up or just pretend it never happened in six months. Place your bets now!
Is Bam Aquino Just Copying the US? (Probably.)
Meanwhile, in the US, some Commerce guy named Lutnick (sounds like a rejected Bond villain) said they’re putting economic data on-chain too. Because nothing says “stable governance” like crypto bros running the show.
Trump’s administration is apparently pro-crypto now-because of course they are. Next up: GDP numbers on Dogecoin. 🚀
So yeah, blockchain budgets-because if there’s one thing politicians love, it’s letting the public see exactly how they waste taxpayer money. Sure, Jan.
Will this actually happen? Doubtful. But hey, at least we got a fun headline out of it. 🤷♂️
