Thai SEC To Widen ETF Lineup With New Rules

On a Wednesday that’s likely to be remembered in crypto circles, Madam Pornanong Budsaratragoon, the SEC’s sharp-witted secretary-general, let the cat out of the bag: they’re makin’ room for more than just BTC. 🚀

In an interview with Bloomberg, the regulator declared, “We’re draftin’ rules so local funds can offer digital asset ETFs by 2026. If you can believe your lying eyes!” 📰

Now, don’t you go thinkin’ the locals are stuck with just Bitcoin. Right now, Thai investors can dabble in overseas crypto ETFs via licensed firms. But mark my words, this is just the beginning. 🤷‍♂️

In June 2024, the SEC gave the green light to One Asset Management to launch a Bitcoin ETF. A bold move, if I do say so myself. 🎉

Last January, the Secretary-General unveiled plans to let both folks and institutions invest in locally listed Bitcoin ETFs. “We must adapt,” she declared, “to give our investors more options in crypto assets, with proper protection.” 🧠💸

“Our aim now is to broaden the crypto basket,” she said, “to offer a wider array of digital treasures.” 🧾🚀

Thailand Continues Crypto Hub Efforts

The Secretary-General also noted that young folks are eager to diversify their portfolios with digital assets. “We must facilitate their dreams under a legal framework,” she said, with a wink. 🌍

The SEC, ever the hustler, has been speedin’ up its efforts to make Thailand a crypto hub. They’ve even got a crypto sandbox in tourist areas to boost the economy. 🚀

The TouristDigiPay sandbox, launched in August, lets tourists convert crypto to Baht. “Bitcoin as payment? Why, that’s the future!” 🧾

Meanwhile, the Deputy Finance Minister, a shrewd chap named Julapun Amornvivat, proposed dropping capital gains tax on digital assets for five years. “Tax-free profits? Now that’s a deal!” 💸
