In a tale straight out of a Dickensian farce, a certain Mr. Bunty Kanaiyalal Sangtani found himself ensnared in a web of deceit so intricate, even a Wodehousian penguin would have blinked in disbelief. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Ahmedabad Police, ever the guardians of justice, has taken to chasing four Nagpur-based scoundrels who allegedly swindled our hero of ₹2.05 crore via a “cryptocurrency investment” scheme that was about as legitimate as a magician’s rabbit in a hat.
The accused, a quartet of individuals whose names sound like they were plucked from a Victorian melodrama-Jay Balram Kakwani, Namdev Rajkumar Mirani, Nikhil Tejram Tawale, and Sanjay Hariram Hemrajani-orchestrated a con so polished, one might have thought they were auditioning for a role in a pantomime. Their modus operandi? A company called Doxy, which promised “high and assured monthly returns” through USDT, a stablecoin so stable it could probably balance a teacup on its head.
How the Fraud Unfolded
It all began in August 2022, when Mr. Sangtani’s brother, a man of dubious judgment, introduced him to the “wonders” of Doxy. The accused, with the charm of a charlatan at a county fair, showed him “wallet entries” that glimmered like gold in the sun. Believing these digital mirages, Mr. Sangtani poured his life savings into the scheme, only to later discover he had as much control over his funds as a squirrel over a nutcracker.
When he attempted to withdraw his “profits,” the accused vanished like a magician’s assistant in a smoke machine. The only return he received? A paltry ₹13.19 lakh, accompanied by the excuse that the company’s “server was having a bad hair day.” Meanwhile, ₹55,850 in brokerage fees disappeared into the ether, leaving our hero as broke as a church mouse and as confused as a penguin in a desert.
Series of Crypto Scams Across Gujarat
This is but the latest in a growing carnival of scams across Gujarat. On October 10, a Gandhidham resident lost ₹56.47 lakh to a Telegram-based scheme called Conforge Finance, while a Rajkot medical rep was fleeced of ₹31.5 lakh via a Facebook friend request. One might say the scammers are as active as a hive of bees with a caffeine overdose.
Authorities Warn of Rising Crypto Frauds
The police, ever the paragons of vigilance, have launched an investigation into the money trail, though one suspects they’re more interested in the tea and biscuits than the actual case. They’ve also issued a stern warning to the public: “Avoid falling for online schemes that promise to double your money or offer guaranteed returns. It’s a trap as old as the hills, and twice as treacherous.”
So, dear reader, if you’re tempted by the siren song of quick riches, remember: a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush-and a con artist’s promise is worth less than a dodo’s egg. Stay sharp, keep your wits about you, and for the love of all that is holy, don’t trust a man who offers you a “sure thing” with a grin wider than a crocodile’s jaw. 🧙♂️💸
