A postal worker confessed to using their job to help commit bank fraud.
Andre Whitehurst of North Carolina, a postal worker, was accused of stealing checks from the mail, according to the Department of Justice.
He sold the checks to his partners in crime, who used fake identities to deposit them into bank accounts and quickly withdrew the money before the fraud was discovered.
The scheme led to more than $364,000 in attempted losses.
In June 2025, Whitehurst admitted guilt to conspiring to commit bank fraud and stealing mail while working as a postal employee.
Russ Ferguson stated that the individual received a 15-month prison sentence, followed by a year of supervised release.
He also agreed to forfeit $74,000 and remains liable for restitution to victims.
His co-conspirators have also pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.
The case comes amid a broader resurgence in check fraud, even as check usage declines.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston reports that while fewer checks are being used each year, check fraud – especially involving stolen or altered checks – has significantly increased. This is happening because billions of checks are still in circulation and the mail system has weaknesses that criminals exploit.
Thieves frequently steal checks from mailboxes or where mail is collected, change them with easily obtainable chemicals, and take advantage of how long it takes banks to process payments. This allows them to cash the checks before anyone realizes they’ve been tampered with.
