This bill is the first brainchild of the new government, led by coup leader Min Aung Hlaing, who’s now playing president. Quite the career move, if you can call it that.

Internet fraud compounds have turned into a regional nightmare. The FBI reports that cryptocurrency-related fraud losses in the U.S. hit a staggering $11.4 billion. Half of all internet crime losses are tied to crypto schemes, and guess where many of these scammers operate? That’s right-Southeast Asian holiday resorts, also known as scam compounds.

U.S. authorities have been playing whack-a-mole, freezing $701 million in crypto tied to global scam networks in April 2026. They’ve even named and shamed compounds in Myanmar and Cambodia, where trafficked or coerced workers are forced to commit large-scale fraud. Lovely.

Myanmar’s operations are no secret. Chainalysis revealed that romance scammers from the KK Park compound in Myawaddy swindled nearly $100 million in crypto between 2022 and 2024. Love hurts, doesn’t it?

This bill is part of a regional trend. Cambodia passed anti-fraud laws in March 2026, offering up to 10 years in prison for ringleaders. Singapore’s planning a Cyber Command unit for July 2026. Everyone’s getting in on the act!
