Estonia Freezes Zondacrypto’s License Amid Fraud Probe and AML Concerns

Estonia Puts Zondacrypto on Notice With Partial License Freeze

Key Highlights

  • Estonia’s FIU partially suspended Zondacrypto operator BB Trade Estonia OÜ’s crypto license.
  • The exchange can no longer accept new client assets or onboard new customers.
  • Existing users can still withdraw and recover their fiat and crypto holdings.

Estonia’s financial watchdog, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), has temporarily limited the operations of BB Trade Estonia OÜ, the company behind the cryptocurrency platform Zondacrypto.

BB Trade Estonia OÜ has had its operating license (number FVT000209) suspended. This means they can’t accept any more money or cryptocurrency from current clients, and they are not allowed to take on any new clients at this time.

Just to clarify, this restriction won’t prevent current customers from withdrawing or getting back their assets. The FIU confirmed that clients can still access and retrieve their money and cryptocurrencies from the platform.

The regulator instructed BB Trade Estonia OÜ to fully comply with the requirements of its operating license. The temporary suspension will be lifted once the FIU confirms the company has fixed all problems and is following all legal rules.

Firm given 30 days to rectify the issue

As a crypto investor, this news is definitely concerning. Basically, the company has 30 days to fix some issues and get everything up to code with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulations. If they don’t comply within that timeframe, the financial regulator will pull their license to operate – meaning they’d be shut down. It’s all based on specific sections of financial and economic laws, but the bottom line is they need to sort this out quickly or face serious consequences, which could impact my investment.

This action by FIU supports their continued work to make sure virtual asset service providers in Estonia follow anti-money laundering rules and other regulations.

In my research, I’ve found that these temporary suspensions usually happen before a regulator takes stronger steps, like completely revoking a company’s license. BB Trade Estonia OÜ clients who are having trouble getting their money back have been advised by the regulator to reach out to their local police for help.

Fraud probe adds to regulatory pressure

Polish authorities are investigating Zondacrypto after receiving complaints from thousands of customers unable to access their funds. Investigators suspect customer losses exceed 350 million zlotys, which is approximately $95.93 million.

Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has connected this situation to national security, explaining that intelligence suggests the people involved have a suspicious background and possible ties to the Russian mafia.

The situation became more serious when the company’s founder, Sylwester Suszek, went missing in 2022. His replacement, Przemyslaw Kral, is believed to be in Israel, potentially making it difficult to bring him back for questioning.

Increased regulatory scrutiny

This news arrives as European Union regulators are paying closer attention to crypto companies. Several countries are now implementing stricter rules, such as the MiCA regulation, to oversee these businesses.

Currently, BB Trade Estonia OÜ and Zondacrypto haven’t released any further information about the suspension. Clients and those involved are advised to watch for official updates from both the Estonian Financial Intelligence Unit and the company itself.
