Well, butter my biscuit and call me confused-the wife of The Sandbox co-founder Sebastien Borget nearly became the star of her own real-life thriller in Villenoy, France. According to the ever-dramatic Le Journal du Dimanche, a gang of would-be kidnappers decided her day needed a little more excitement.
- Borget’s wife dodged a bullet (or a Citroën C3) thanks to some nosy-er, heroic-neighbors.
- Two suspects are cooling their heels in custody, while four others are presumably still out there, plotting their next poorly executed scheme.
- France has seen 41 crypto-related abductions since January. Yes, you read that right. Forty-one. Someone call the Guinness World Records.
The action-packed scene unfolded on Tuesday, May 20, at the couple’s home on Rue Sadi-Carnot in Villenoy, Seine-et-Marne. Borget, the brains behind The Sandbox (a metaverse platform where NFTs and the SAND token reign supreme), was presumably busy in the metaverse while his wife faced a far less virtual threat. Thankfully, she emerged unscathed, though I’m sure her heart rate could’ve powered a small village.
Here’s the kicker: one of the geniuses showed up dressed as a delivery worker, complete with a vest and a cardboard box. Because nothing says “I’m here to kidnap you” like a fake Amazon package. When Borget’s wife opened the gate, five hooded accomplices burst in like extras from a low-budget heist movie. They tried to drag her into a Citroën C3-because nothing says “getaway car” like a French hatchback.
Neighbors to the Rescue: The Real Heroes of Villenoy
Thankfully, the neighbors-bless their curious souls-heard the commotion and intervened. The kidnappers, clearly not expecting an audience, fled the scene faster than a politician at a fact-checking convention. Four hopped into the Citroën, while two others made a run for it. Spoiler alert: they didn’t get far. The Meaux Anti-Crime Brigade nabbed them shortly after they ordered a ride-hail car. Because of course they did.
The arrested suspects? Mateo V. (born in 2010) and Walid H. (born in 2009). Yes, you read that right. These kids were barely old enough to drive, let alone mastermind a kidnapping. They’re from Pantin in Seine-Saint-Denis, where apparently the local youth have been watching too many crime dramas.
Police found a bag containing a fake handgun, zip-tie restraints, and balaclavas. Basically, the discount aisle of a kidnapper’s supply store. Four suspects remain at large, presumably rethinking their career choices.
Crypto: The New Magnet for Mayhem
Le Journal du Dimanche hinted that the attempted kidnapping “would be linked to cryptocurrencies.” Shocking, I know. Who could’ve guessed that people with digital fortunes might become targets? The case adds to France’s growing list of crypto-related crimes, which now includes 41 abductions since January. That’s one every two and a half days. Someone needs to tell these criminals to take a day off.
French authorities have been scrambling to keep up, launching emergency protocols and a prevention platform to protect digital asset holders. Meanwhile, “wrench attacks”-where victims are forced to transfer crypto at gunpoint-are on the rise. Prosecutors charged 88 people in April alone, including ten minors. Because nothing says “future is bright” like kids turning to crypto crime.
Authorities have warned crypto holders to keep a low profile online. So, maybe lay off the Instagram posts of your Lambo and NFT collection. Just a thought.
