So, Gavin Newsom, our fearless leader, decided to sign this “first-in-the-nation executive order” on Thursday to tackle AI workforce disruption. Big deal. Like we needed another meeting of the minds to tell us robots are stealing jobs.
Apparently, the order is supposed to prep workers, small businesses, and communities for the AI apocalypse. Because, you know, nothing says “future-proof” like a committee of universities, economists, and industry execs brainstorming over cold coffee.
What’s in This Masterplan?
Oh, the usual. New severance rules, employment insurance, and transition payments. Basically, a fancy way of saying, “Here’s a band-aid for your career hemorrhage.” Also, they’re throwing around ideas like worker-owned companies and universal basic capital. Because nothing screams “practical” like socialism with a Silicon Valley twist.
And let’s not forget the public dashboard to track AI’s impact. Because what’s more comforting than watching your industry die in real-time on a government website?
“California has never sat back and watched as the future happened to us…” Newsom said. Yeah, Gavin, because sitting in traffic on the 405 is peak productivity.

I just signed a first-of-its-kind executive order to empower workers impacted by AI.
California will pursue new policies that make sure working Californians – not just Big Tech – benefit from the wealth and breakthroughs coming out of this space.

The EDD is building a dashboard, and the Labor Agency has 180 days to update the WARN Act. Because nothing says “urgent” like a 6-month deadline. Also, an AI playbook and a single online portal. Revolutionary. Almost as revolutionary as the DMV’s website.
Why Now? Oh, Right. 114,000 Layoffs.
Silicon Valley’s been on a firing spree, with 114,000 jobs axed in 2026. ClickUp cut 22% of its staff because their CEO wants a “100x organization.” Sure, Zeb, whatever you say. Intuit and Meta joined the party, cutting thousands more. Meanwhile, Standard Chartered’s planning a 15% slash by 2030. Because who needs humans when you have algorithms?
California, home to 33 of the top 50 AI companies, is right in the eye of the storm. Or, as I like to call it, the eye of the “Why didn’t I learn to code?” storm.
