It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s a cryptocurrency-fueled airline! ๐คฏ Emirates, the airline that’s been flying high for decades, has teamed up with Crypto.com to introduce crypto payments for travel. Because, you know, the future is now, and the future is crypto… or so they say. ๐ค
According to a fancy announcement on July 9, Emirates has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Crypto.com to integrate digital payments into its services. And by services, we mean flights, in-flight meals, and possibly even those fancy airport lounges. The rollout will begin with Crypto.com Pay, because who needs cash when you can use cryptocurrency, right? ๐ธ
The agreement was formalized in Dubai, with all the bigwigs in attendance, including Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline & Group. We’re pretty sure he’s a big deal. It was signed by Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, and Mohammed Al Hakim, President of Crypto.com’s UAE operations. We’re sure they all had a lovely cup of tea and a nice chat about the future of money. โ๏ธ
Emirates says this move is all about offering flexible payment options for customers, because who doesn’t love a good payment option? And by flexible, we mean crypto. The partnership builds on its earlier interest in crypto payments, which dates back to 2022, when COO Adel Ahmed Al-Redha had a brilliant idea to accept Bitcoin (BTC). We’re pretty sure it was a coincidence that the UAE introduced crypto-friendly regulations around the same time. ๐ค
Commenting on the deal, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer Adnan Kazim said, “We see growing demand and momentum around crypto as a legitimate payment method, especially among tech-driven travelers.” Because, you know, tech-driven travelers are the future, and the future is crypto… or so they say. ๐ค
“Partnering with Crypto.com to integrate cryptocurrency into our digital payments system reflects Emirates’ commitment to meeting evolving customer preferences,” he added. And by evolving customer preferences, we mean the preference to use crypto instead of actual money. ๐ธ
Crypto.com President and COO Eric Anziani chimed in, saying that the partnership marks another step in expanding real-world use cases for crypto payments. Because, you know, crypto payments are a thing now. And by real-world use cases, we mean buying flights and in-flight meals with crypto. ๐ด
The feature is expected to go live next year, once internal readiness and regulatory approvals are in place. And by regulatory approvals, we mean the approvals that will make sure this whole crypto thing doesn’t go haywire. ๐ซ Both Emirates and Crypto.com will also explore leveraging promotional marketing campaigns to create awareness and encourage adoption of this new payment solution. Because, you know, who doesn’t love a good marketing campaign? ๐ฃ
If completed, Emirates would become one of the first major international airlines to fully integrate crypto into its payment stack. And by fully integrate, we mean they’ll accept crypto as payment. Which is a big deal, apparently. ๐คฏ
