A Trump Coin? Heavens! The Treasury’s Bold (and Questionable) Plan 🪙

Pray tell, dear reader, what manner of folly has befallen the U.S. Treasury? Rumours abound of a one-dollar coin bearing the visage of Mr. Donald Trump, a notion confirmed with a gravity most unsettling.

Imagine, if you will, the astonishment that gripped this humble narrator upon learning that Mr. Trump, already the progenitor of a most peculiar “memecoin,” might now grace the currency of a nation. The Treasury, with a solemnity that borders on the absurd, has declared this to be no mere gossip, but a veritable fact. 🤑

“No fake news here,” proclaimed U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach, with an air of one who doth protest too much. “These first drafts honoring America’s 250th Birthday and @POTUS are real,” he assured, though one cannot help but wonder at the wisdom of such an endeavor. “Looking forward to sharing more soon,” he added, once the government’s latest tantrum-a shutdown, no less-has ceased. 🙄

Yet, a most inconvenient truth presents itself: current legislation, in its infinite wisdom, forbids the minting of coins bearing the likeness of living souls, presidents included. Section 6 of the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 declares, with a clarity most unyielding, “No head and shoulders portrait or bust of any person, living or dead, and no portrait of a living person may be included in the design on the reverse of specified coins.” How, one must ask, does the Trump administration propose to navigate this impediment? 🤔

The proposed design, currently making its rounds, features a bust of the president on one side, and on the reverse, an image of Mr. Trump pumping his fist with the inscription “fight, fight, fight.” A most curious choice, celebrating, as it does, the president’s survival of an alleged attempt on his life. One cannot help but marvel at the audacity of it all. 🥊

History, it seems, offers a cautionary tale. Calvin Coolidge, the only living president to be featured on a U.S. coin, saw his 1926 half-dollar met with a most tepid reception. A million were minted, yet 859,408 were returned and melted, a fate most ignominious. One wonders if Mr. Trump’s coin might suffer a similar destiny. 🪦

When queried on the matter, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt offered a response most telling in its vagueness. “I’m not sure if he’s seen it,” she remarked, “but I’m sure he’ll love it.” A sentiment, one suspects, not universally shared. 😏
