Ancient Bitcoin Awakens: 2011 Wallet Shifts 4,000 BTC After 14 Years of Silence

Thursday, in an unexpected burst of excitement, Whale Alert’s X post caused quite the stir as it revealed a dormant 2011 Bitcoin wallet had decided to rouse itself from its 14-year slumber. A whopping 4,000 BTC-worth a jaw-dropping $442 million-had been moved, leaving the crypto world in a frenzy.

Vintage 2011 Bitcoin Wallet Springs to Life

It’s not every day that a Bitcoin relic from 2011 decides to shake off the dust and move its substantial fortune. But, lo and behold, one such relic thought, “Why not stir things up?” and made a rather dramatic transfer.

Blockchain detectives Whale Alert and btcparser.com were quick to spot the movement. As Whale Alert tweeted:

“A dormant address containing 4,000 BTC (442,256,951 USD) has just been activated after 14.3 years (worth 67,724 USD in 2011)!”

Btcparser didn’t miss a beat either. They flagged the wallet “18eY9o,” which was created on June 27, 2011, after it moved 150.00000223 BTC in block 920434. The relic P2PKH (Pay-to-Public-Key-Hash) address sent 150 BTC to a shiny new P2WSH (Pay-to-Witness-Script-Hash) wallet, while the remaining 3,849.99999777 BTC wobbled back to a P2PKH change address.

The movement did not go unnoticed. Onchain analyst Sani, the Sherlock Holmes of blockchain, jumped in to detail the sequence on X. Sani’s insight: only 150 BTC got a one-way ticket to a fresh wallet, while the rest stayed comfortably where they’ve been for over a decade-basking in their digital obscurity in a change address.

“These coins were part of coinbase rewards consolidation 14 years ago, mined as early as April 15, 2009, almost 3 and a half months after the network went live,” Sani shared, adding:

“So far, only 150 BTC has been sent to a new address, with the change returning to the same address. None of these coins came from Patoshi.”

Sometimes, a small transfer like this can be the proverbial tip of the iceberg-a nudge that could reveal an enormous stash lying dormant. Sure enough, the newly minted P2WSH wallet didn’t rest on its laurels for long. It quickly hopped to another P2WSH address with the majority of its contents-about 149.13275864 BTC-now comfortably settled elsewhere.
