April 2026: Crypto Hacks Outdo Even the Devil’s Plans!

Alas, the year 2026 has witnessed a most grievous calamity: over $606 million lost to crypto hacks in a mere 18 days of April! A feat so magnificent, it outshines even the darkest corners of February 2025.

The villainy stems from two dastardly attacks on KelpDAO and Drift Protocol, whose combined mischief accounts for 95% of April’s woes and 75% of 2026’s grand total of $771.8 million. A tale of two disasters, indeed!

April’s Losses Dwarf Q1’s Meager Gains

According to the esteemed DefiLlama, April’s $606.2 million in 12 incidents has already surpassed the first quarter’s pitiful $165.5 million. A triumph of 3.7 times the combined might of January, February, and March! A true marvel of mathematical absurdity.

Follow us on X to witness the chaos as it unfolds

Month Number of Hacks Amount Lost
January 12 $100.1M
February 8 $24.2M
March 15 $41.3M
April (to April 18) 12 $606.2M
YTD Total 47 $771.8M

Since February 2025, every month has been a mere shadow of the $240 million mark, save for the fateful February 2025, when the Bybit breach cast a $1.4 billion shadow. A tale of woe, indeed!

April 2026’s losses arrived without the spectacle of a headline exchange hack. A cunning shift, as attackers now favor Decentralized Finance (DeFi) infrastructure-a realm where chaos reigns supreme.

BeInCrypto reports that KelpDAO, in a most tragic turn, lost over $290 million on April 18, now the year’s largest single hack. Drift Protocol, a close second, lost $285 million. A duel of dastardly deeds!

The damage has piled up like a mountain of despair. Incidents at Vercel, Hyperbridge, Grinex Exchange, and Rhea Finance have added to the woes of 2026.

“None of these accounts for the collateral damage seen across TVL, user trust, valuations, and the space’s morale. DeFi remains a niche market until risk can be properly priced; at this time, we’re far from it,” an anlyst wrote.

DeFi TVL Slides as Sentiment Cracks

DeFi total value locked (TVL) fell by more than 7% over the past 24 hours following the Kelp exploit. Aave alone dropped from $26.4 billion to near $17.9 billion. A spectacle of despair!

“Every protocol is taking a hit now,” analyst Ted Pillows wrote.

Not a great 24 hours for crypto’s image.

The biggest DeFi hack of 2026 hit yesterday with Kelp DAO exploited for $292m.

Then RAVE token crashed 95% in one day after a vertical pump to $28, wiping $6.3bn in market cap. That’s on the back of investigations into alleged insider…

Hack frequency is also climbing sharply. DeFi recorded 47 incidents in the first 4.5 months of 2026, compared with 28 over the same period in 2025. A 68% rise! A veritable epidemic of greed and folly.

The reactions point to rising concern that DeFi’s risk pricing has not caught up with infrastructure-layer exploits. Dollar losses sit below 2025’s Bybit-skewed pace, yet incidents keep stacking. The next few weeks will show whether DeFi can tighten security before April’s trend defines the year. A tale of caution, indeed!
