In a shocking twist that no one saw coming, Crypto.com is now claiming that those whispers about a 2023 data breach are, well, just “unfounded.” Who knew that companies could use such fancy words for “not true”? 🙄
Apparently, Bloomberg reported on Friday that Noah Urban, an honorary member of the notorious hacking group Scattered Spider (who clearly has too much free time), alleged that the group “phished” their way into one of Crypto.com’s employee accounts back in early 2023. This little escapade exposed some user information. You know, just the usual “oopsie” moment for a billion-dollar company.
Then, blockchain investigator ZachXBT (a name that screams trustworthiness, doesn’t it?) took to X (formerly Twitter, for those of you who still cling to the past) to declare that Crypto.com had, in fact, covered up the whole thing. He even went as far as to say that Crypto.com has “been breached several times” – because, well, one leak is never enough for some people. 🎉
Of course, some crypto pundits (because who doesn’t love a good gossip session?) piled on, saying Crypto.com should’ve been more upfront about the whole thing. After all, user data leaks have been a hot topic ever since Coinbase decided to let hackers turn their customer info into a free-for-all earlier this year.
But don’t worry, Crypto.com wasn’t sitting on its hands. A spokesperson told CryptoMoon that they filed an “official Notice of Data Security Incident” in the U.S. Nationwide Multistate Licensing System. They also made “additional reports with relevant jurisdictional regulators,” which probably means they sent some emails to people who didn’t read them. 📧
Crypto.com Insists It’s All Fine – Really!
The company says they “detected a phishing campaign” that targeted an employee in 2023. Oh, and the breach only involved a teensy bit of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) affecting a “very small number of individuals.” So, nothing to panic about, right? It’s not like your data was the real target here. And, of course, “no customer funds were accessed or ever at risk,” they hastily added. Phew! 😅
Whether Crypto.com notified the affected individuals is still up in the air, and they’ve been strangely quiet about whether they made their filings available for the public to view. Maybe they’re hoping everyone forgot about it by next week? 🤷♀️
CEO Responds with a “Misinformation” Rant
Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek jumped into the fray on Sunday, claiming that the whole story was just “misinformation” being spread by “uninformed sources.” Because who doesn’t love a good conspiracy theory to spice up their weekend, right? 😏
“Any suggestion that we did not report or disclose a security incident is completely unfounded,” he wrote, as if that could magically make everything better. He also reiterated that Crypto.com reported the breach to the U.S. and other “relevant jurisdictional regulators” – because that totally means it didn’t happen, obviously.
Earlier this month, Trump Media & Technology Group (yes, that’s right, the one behind Truth Social) made a deal with Crypto.com to establish a Cronos (CRO) treasury. Looks like Crypto.com is cozying up with the big guys these days. Who says crypto and politics don’t mix? 🤝
