Since 2022, Singapore’s Project Guardian has been giving financial institutions a sandbox to play in, allowing them to test tokenized assets and decentralized finance (DeFi) without, you know, burning everything down. Fast forward to now, and the focus is on taking those cute little pilots and turning them into full-blown real-world implementations. Public blockchains are finally making their way into financial institutions – and they’re all getting serious about it.

In 2024, HSBC and Euroclear hopped on board with JPMorgan and Citi, showing just how determined Singapore is to lead the blockchain charge. Watch out, world!

Project Guardian: Now With 100% More Tokenized Debt Markets

By 2025, Project Guardian is cranking things up to 11. The International Capital Market Association (ICMA) is leading the charge to tokenize debt markets. And recently, Singapore’s Investment Management Association of Singapore (IMAS) and the UK’s Investment Association (IA) joined the fun. Who knew asset tokenization could sound so exciting?

But not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Regulatory challenges are still lurking around the corner. However, permissioned DeFi is swooping in to save the day by combining the beauty of blockchain with the necessary evils of compliance. By 2033, tokenized assets could be worth a cool $19 trillion. Yes, trillion.

Real-world assets and Treasury Bills are making Singapore the hot new place to be for investors. Franklin Templeton has launched the first tokenized fund for all Singapore investors, and guess what? It’s approved by MAS and has a minimum investment of just $20. Talk about democratizing finance!

Payment Systems in Singapore Go Tokenized (Because Why Not?)

Did you think Singapore would stop at assets? Of course not. As one of Asia’s largest FX markets, Singapore is stepping up its game by improving cross-border payments with regulated stablecoins. MAS has given a thumbs-up to stablecoins from Paxos and StraitsX, which are making transactions faster, cheaper, and more transparent. Can we get a round of applause for that?

Tokenized bank liabilities on public blockchains like the XRP Ledger (XRPL) are helping institutions keep their act together, maintain compliance, and-wait for it-prevent fraud. You know, little things like that.

And it doesn’t stop there. Blockchain interoperability is making asset movement across different networks smoother than your grandma’s apple pie. No more fragmentation-just seamless transactions. Ripple’s CTO, David Schwartz, recently shared that XRPL’s design has stood the test of time and is influencing newer blockchains. Clearly, the blockchain universe is in good hands.
