Pi Network is upgrading its Mainnet to a new version, Protocol 21. All node operators need to update their systems by April 6th. Nodes that aren’t updated by the deadline will be removed from the network.
The Pi Core Team announced on X that node operators need to upgrade their systems by following the instructions in the official guide. This upgrade is mandatory, and those who don’t complete it by the deadline will be disconnected from the Pi Mainnet.
What the Upgrade Means
Protocol 21 is one of a series of improvements Pi Network is making to its system before the major v23.0 release on May 18th. These updates are being rolled out gradually to keep the network stable, with each version adding to the previous one.
Node operators are essential to the Pi network. They confirm transactions, ensure everyone agrees on the network’s state, and keep it running smoothly. Failing to install a required update isn’t just a small problem – it completely disconnects you from the rest of the network.
The Community Is Frustrated
The official announcement was simple enough, but the response from the community revealed a lot of underlying frustration. Many people, calling themselves Pioneers, used the announcement as a chance to share their long-held complaints, most of which focused on the requirement for Know Your Customer (KYC) verification.
Baqeer shared that he’s been ‘mining’ Pi since its launch, but hasn’t yet received a chance to complete the required Know Your Customer (KYC) verification. His experience is common, as many users have been waiting for years to be verified.
I heard from another investor who’s been stuck in KYC hell for three years! He’s completed everything on the Mainnet checklist except for one thing, and he says it’s something he literally can’t fix on his end. It’s incredibly frustrating to hear about these long delays.
“PCT, please kindly attend to these issues for us,” he wrote.
A Bigger Concern
Aside from the difficulties with the identity verification process, some users have expressed concern about the future of the network. One user pointed out that if fewer people run nodes, the network could become controlled by a small group, which would defeat the purpose of Pi Network’s decentralized design.
Pi Network hasn’t addressed the concerns about the Know Your Customer (KYC) process following the announcement about Protocol 21. Node operators need to update their systems by April 6th, but many Pi Network users are still waiting to complete verification, which is necessary to access the Pi they’ve earned over the years.
