So, Robinhood-yes, that Robinhood-is getting into the posh S&P 500 club. Meanwhile, Strategy, a perfectly eligible Bitcoin-adjacent company, has been given the cold shoulder. Apparently, rules are merelyā¦suggestions when a shadowy committee is involved.
S&P 500 Chooses Meme Stocks Over Sensible Bitcoin Plays (Go Figure)
On September 5th, S&P Dow Jones Indices had a bit of a shuffling spree, announcing that Applovin (Nasdaq: APP), Robinhood Markets (Nasdaq: HOOD), and Emcor Group (NYSE: EME) were getting golden tickets to the S&P 500 party, effective September 22nd. This involved booting out Marketaxess Holdings, Caesars Entertainment… and, ouch, Enphase Energy. The official word? To keep things aligned with the huge, lumbering beast that is the US large-cap equity market. You know, making sure everythingās *just so*.
Strategy (Nasdaq: MSTR), however, found itself on the outside looking in. Despite ticking all the boxes, it wasnāt deemed worthy. Analysts are, shall we say, perplexed. Bloombergās James Seyffart eloquently put it on X (formerly known as Twitter, for those of us still adjusting): āThe index committee has full discretion to add and remove names as they see fit.ā A profoundly insightful statement, really. His colleague, Eric Balchunas, went a bit further:
Why wasnāt $MSTR allowed into the S&P 500 Index despite meeting all the criteria? Because the āCommitteeā said no. You have to realize SPX is essentially an active fund run by a secret committee.
Of the newbies, only Robinhood actually dabbles in the interesting world of cryptocurrency, letting people buy, sell, and, occasionally, lose money on digital coins. Applovin is in the business of ads for apps (a thrilling sector, Iām sure. š“) and Emcor Group constructs things. Buildings, probably. Infrastructure. You know, practical stuff.
Now, itās not like the S&P 500 is anti-crypto. Coinbase and Block were welcomed with open arms in the past. This makes the Strategy snub all the moreā¦ baffling. It underscores that the ārulesā of the S&P 500 are more like guidelines, and the committee operates with a level of discretion that would make a Bond villain blush.
